Understanding DOT Testing

What is DOT Drug Testing & Who Needs It?

DOT drug testing is a federally mandated program under 49 CFR Part 40 that requires safety-sensitive employees in the transportation industry to be tested for drugs and alcohol. This applies to commercial truck drivers, pilots, train engineers, transit operators, pipeline workers, and maritime crew.

As a certified mobile collector, Stephen Christian brings the collection directly to your worksite or fleet yard—keeping your operations running and ensuring zero employee downtime. Whether you're an employer managing a random pool or an individual needing a pre-employment test, we handle the chain-of-custody with military precision.

Our Role in the DOT Testing Chain

Precision DNA & Drug Testing is a specimen collection service. We do not perform the laboratory analysis or issue final results. We partner exclusively with SAMHSA-certified laboratories that perform the actual testing, and a licensed Medical Review Officer (MRO) reviews and verifies all non-negative results before they are released to the employer. This separation of duties is required by DOT regulations and ensures the integrity of every test.

FAQ

DOT Drug Testing FAQs for San Antonio Employers

A 5-panel DOT drug test is the federally mandated urine drug screening required under 49 CFR Part 40. It detects marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and phencyclidine.
Negative results are typically returned within 24–48 hours. Non-negative results take 3–5 business days due to MRO review.
We work with laboratory partners that include MRO services. The MRO is a licensed physician separate from our collection service who reviews all non-negative results and verifies them before releasing the final result to the employer. This separation is a DOT compliance requirement.
At this time, we focus on collection services. For random pool selection, consortium membership, and full program management, we can refer you to compliant TPA (Third Party Administrator) partners. We handle the on-site collection piece of your existing program with zero downtime for your drivers.
Under DOT regulations, a refusal to test is treated the same as a positive result. The driver is immediately removed from safety-sensitive duties and must complete the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) return-to-duty process before they can perform DOT-regulated work again. We document any refusal scenario thoroughly on the chain-of-custody form.
Every DOT collection follows the Federal Drug Testing Custody and Control Form (CCF) protocol. The donor is verified by photo ID, the collection container is sealed and labeled in their presence, both parties initial the seals, and the sealed specimen travels in a tamper-evident bag directly to the laboratory. Stephen's 26 years of laboratory experience means chain-of-custody integrity is treated as the priority — because in court or in compliance review, that's what holds up.
